Looking after your boiler might not seem like something that you need a guide for, but our engineers at Boiler Boys London have outlined some top tips to keep your boiler in great condition so as to avoid expensive maintenance and repair costs. As your boiler gets daily use, it is important to ensure that it is functioning at its most efficient level.
Check your boiler’s pressure
Every boiler has a pressure gauge that is easily readable by the average user. The needle on the gauge indicates the pressure of your boiler and should sit somewhere between 1 and 1.5 bar. It is possible for your boiler's pressure to drop below this in some instances, and if this happens then the pressure will need to be increased need in order to get your boiler performing as it should again.
In order to do this safely, you should always consult the manual of your boiler, or look for the model online if you do not have it present at home. Or if you really don't feel confident in yourself to do this without professional help, then call our Gas Safe registered engineers on 020 8997 0614 and we would be more than happy to advise or assist you.
Clean your boiler
We strongly advise that it is not safe to clean the inside of your boiler, as this can risk damage if not done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. However, it is worth regularly dusting all around the outside as boilers in order to ensure that it is best placed to function efficiently. It is possible for boilers to accumulate dust like everything else in your home, and this can negatively affect how well they work.
Let your boiler breathe
All boilers need ventilation, so ensure that it has plenty of space to breathe and there is no clutter around it. It might be tempting to use the cupboard that your boiler is in for storage but there is potential for this to negatively affect how it works, so we suggest that you clear the area around your boiler and ensure it isn’t in contact with any coats, towels, or bed linen.
Don't leave your boiler turned off throughout the whole summer
As we're currently in the winter, this tip is one to keep in mind later next year, but we thought we'd mention it now so that you can keep it in mind... When the warmer summer months approach, you would be forgiven for thinking that there is no need to keep your boiler switched on when you don’t need it, as keeping it switched off saves energy and reduces the cost of your energy bills.
However, we advise that you do turn your heating back on for half an hour or so during the summer to ensure that your boiler isn't left idle. This might not seem to make sense as you may believe that if it is not in use, then what's the harm? But, you should think about a boiler in the same way as you would a car. If it’s been sat on the drive a long time without use, it might struggle to perform as well as it did before you stopped using it!
Invest in a carbon monoxide detector
This simple step could quite literally save your life, as it detects this silent and scent-free poison. A carbon monoxide detector will alert you to leaks from your boiler or other gas appliances and help keep you safe in your home.
