With the colder autumn months approaching, our heating experts have some great advice about how to ensure that your house is geared for battle when taking on the cold! We advise that you book your boiler service today to avoid missing out on the busiest period of the year, by calling our heating engineers on 020 8997 0614 to schedule in a booking.
If you have not yet had your annual boiler service check this year, then we suggest that you need to think about doing so very soon to get ahead of the rush when the temperature drops off.
Every October, as the temperature sharply drops and nights start earlier, more and more customers encounter boiler problems. These could be due to frozen pipes, or even due to long periods with their central heating turned off throughout the summer.
Why is it important to prepare my home for autumn and winter?
There is no denying that the worst time of year to experience any kind of issues with your boiler, is undoubtedly when heating engineers across the country are busy and booked up appointments. With much colder temperatures, engineers' schedules become increasingly hectic, and there is generally much less available for plumbing and heating repairs, especially emergency repairs.
That's why if your boiler unexpectedly breaks down, it can leave you without any heating or hot water for an extended period of time, which you surely would want to avoid with the much colder Autumn and Winter temperatures.
In addition, this year is like no other. With the global Coronavirus pandemic restricting many homeowners and residents to their homes, it may be the case that much of the remainder of 2020 will have to be spent indoors. With an unprecedented number of people stuck in their homes for longer periods this year, it is safe to say that we are inevitably going to encounter much more boiler problems than usual via more usage, wear and tear.

Listen out for strange noises coming from your boiler and radiators
If you hear any strange noises coming from your boiler, such as kettling or banging, you should book in a boiler service. could mean that limescale and sludge have accumulated on your boiler's heat exchanger. When limescale and sludge build-up on the heat exchanger, the flow of water is restricted, causing it to overheat and reducing your boiler's efficiency.
Check your boiler's pressure regularly
Another thing you can look out for is low boiler pressure. This is much easier to spot, as all you need to do is to check the pressure gauge on the front of your boiler after turning it on again after it's been dormant. The pressure gauge should read 1.5-bar, but any lower than 1.0 would mean that your boiler has low pressure. The solution to low boiler pressure is bleeding your radiators to release any trapped air, however, if the pressure still remains low, you should call in a Gas Safe registered engineer like one of ours to help you set it straight.
Invest in some pipe lagging
We advise that you head over to your local DIY shop and purchase some pipe lagging for your boiler's pipes. Lagging will only cost you a few pounds, and when the temperature suddenly drops, pipe lagging will protect your boiler's condensate pipe from freezing. Condensate pipes transport waste from your boiler to the outside of your house, and if they freeze, they could even end up bursting, which would result in an expensive repair!
